Is a scholar an elitist?

It is common for us to associate scholars with elitists. After all, in order for a scholar to obtain his scholarship, he needs to be outstanding in certain aspects, distinguishing himself from his peers. However, it is misleading to assume all scholars are part of the privileged few with absolute right to wealth and power.

Whatever reasons one might have for becoming a scholar, an undeniable fact is that all scholars want to have an advantage over others in the modern competitive world. Some are students who need financial assistance while others are attracted by the job opportunities which scholarships provide upon graduation. Some might even be solely after the prestige of a scholarship. Therefore, for most scholars, obtaining a scholarship is just a mean to reach their goals. It is only after they become successful later on in life that some might start to feel that they belong to a higher echelon in society.

For scholars who believe that they are vastly superior, it is probably due to their upbringing and other environmental factors. They have already been shaped to have the mindset of an elitist even before having obtained the scholarship. Thus, it is not surprising that they retain their “elitist” mindset even after becoming a scholar.

A scholarship does not change a person into an elitist overnight. Neither does it has the power to. No doubt some might feel slightly superior because of the exclusive benefits they received from the scholarship but the extent of self-gratification will not lead them into thinking they are vastly superior to everyone else.

Ultimately, it is not the scholarship that matters but the holder of the scholarship. One can be exceptionally capable and smart yet humble at the same time.

Huat ah. with that I am finally done with the application of all my scholarships. one less worry off my mind thanks in large part to the ketchup tycoon DEL MONTE! whew. lets see... what shall i do for the rest of the day?
